What is landscape art?
With the onset of secularization in Europe, the church and the nobility ceased to be patrons of professional artists. As a result, a new market gradually developed that appealed to a broad, middle-class audience. Biblical-influenced painting of the 16th century was replaced by independent themes such as landscapes, still lifes, genre scenes, and seascapes. The depiction of domestic and foreign landscapes fascinated a large number of artists in particular and laid the foundation for one of the most important art genres to this day.
