Christoph Bäuml is a sculptor from the Regensburg area. With his wooden and bronze figures, which he stages in a colorful and characterful way, he tells stories of objects, plants, and animals that have come to life, but are often disregarded or forgotten in everyday life. Some of his seemingly gloomy characters evoke associations with the visual language of Tim Burton or Walter Moers—even though Bäuml confidently avoids explicit references through his striking yet loving treatment of material surfaces, instead making his own voice clearly recognizable between figurative sculpture, comic drawing, and fairy tale narration.

This sculpture exemplifies Bäuml's loving attention to detail: expressive facial features, childlike proportions, and the characteristic button on the belly.

About Christoph Bäuml

Christoph Bäuml (*1984) trained as a wood sculptor at the Vocational School for Wood Sculpture in Munich from 2011 to 2014. He began exhibiting his work early on in art associations in southern Germany and has since presented his work at trade fairs such as ArtStuttgart, Stroke Artfair Munich, KUBO Show in Herne, at KUNSTMITTE as part of ArtKarlsruhe, and at the municipal art museum in Erlangen.

Style and technology

Christoph Bäuml's works range from figurative sculpture to pop, street, and toy art. They are characterized by the whimsical design of the protagonists depicted in each sculpture, which seem to draw on features from cartoons and the world of children's and youth fairy tales. However, the mood is not always cheerful; sometimes the figures are shown bent over, depressed, or with shady intentions, raising issues such as illness, transience, and criticism of the system in general.
